1st Madeira Film Festival
The Madeira Film Festival is an independent environmental film festival, whose first edition will take place in the Reid’s Palace Hotel, between the 2nd and the 6th of May.
This supporting ecological preservation and natural resources event has the clear intention to develop an international awareness for the “living relic” that Madeira Island posses – the Laurissilva forest, distinguished by the UNESCO, in 1999, as World Natural Heritage of Mankind. It’s on this amazing natural resource basis that the festival organization believes there is no better place in the world to promote a film event dedicated entirely to nature. With a promising agenda of short and feature film, as well as special guests from different areas in the art scene, such as Kyle Eastwood – son of actor Clint Eastwood, who will open the festival with a jazz concert –, Phamie Gow and Jennifer Logue, the event will also cover debates, workshops and seminars related to movies and nature conservation. In order to combine art and education, the organization has created a competition in the following areas: communication & marketing; arts and design; multimedia, theatre, tourism, events, solidarity; environment; sustainability and renewable energies. Several students from high schools, universities and institutes have entered this competition and have created a five-minute film about the Laurissilva or a poster for the 2013 edition of the Madeira Film Festival. The winners of the competition will have the opportunity to see their movie included in this prestigious event. The festival will present 54 movies divided into different categories, which will be evaluated by an international jury.
